Hotakainen transitioned to writing children's and young adult books, later moving to adult novels. He became a full-time writer in 1996 and gained recognition after being nominated for the Finlandia Prize in 1997. His notable works include "Juoksuhaudantie" and he has received several awards, including the Finlandia Prize and the Northern Drama Award. He has also written children's plays and radio dramas.
