Kakuji Watanabe was a Japanese scholar of German literature, born on June 3, 1902, in Tokyo. He graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Tokyo Imperial University in 1926. Watanabe served as a professor at the Fifth Higher School and later at Osaka University after World War II, where he was appointed as a professor in the College of Arts until his retirement in 1966, after which he was named professor emeritus. He conducted research on Romantic poets such as Goethe and Hölderlin, as well as Low German language studies.
