He began playing guitar at age three and later switched to bass. Raglin's career began with the Eugene Coys band from 1938 to 1941, before he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra, replacing Jimmy Blanton. Raglin performed with Ellington until 1945 and occasionally later with figures like Art Tatum, before retiring from the jazz scene.
