Jukka Jari Korpela is a Finnish historian and professor of general history at the University of Eastern Finland. He began his career as an ancient historian, earning a PhD in 1987 with a dissertation on the social status of physicians in Imperial Rome. His research focuses on medieval power structures, saints' cults, and various historical issues related to medieval Russia and Eastern Finland. Korpela has written several monographs, arguing against the prohibition of blessing same-sex couples in the Orthodox tradition. He converted to Orthodoxy in adulthood and was ordained as a deacon in 1995.
