Juan Carlos I was the King of Spain from 1975 to 2014, remembered for facilitating Spain's transition from dictatorship to democracy after the death of Francisco Franco. He played a crucial role in preventing a military coup in 1981 and was named the most popular leader in Ibero-America in 2008. However, his popularity declined prior to his abdication due to a series of royal blunders, including a hunting trip in Botswana during Spain's economic crisis. He abdicated at the age of 76, after nearly 40 years on the throne, in favor of his son Felipe de Borbón.
