Juan Carlos Bares, known as 'El indio', was an important Uruguayan payador born on March 11, 1930, in Cerros de San Juan, Colonia. He gained prominence in the second half of the 20th century for his contributions to traditional Uruguayan music and poetry, particularly in the realm of payada, a form of folk poetry set to music. Bares left a significant mark on the art form before his passing on June 23, 1999.
