Dr. Juan Antonio Samaranch was a Spanish sports official who served as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) starting in 1966 and was the sports minister under Franco's regime. He became the seventh president of the IOC on July 16, 1980, succeeding Michael Morris, 3rd Baron Killanin. Samaranch held this position for 21 years until he was succeeded by Jacques Rogge in 2001. He was influential in promoting the Olympic movement and played a key role in the commercialization of the Games.
