Josephine Edna Salmons was a South African anthropologist known for discovering the Taung skull in 1924, a significant fossil that contributed to the theory of human origins in Africa rather than Asia. She studied at the University of Witwatersrand from 1922 to 1925, graduating with honors in science. Despite her groundbreaking discovery of the Australopithecus africanus skull, which was instrumental in modern human paleontology, Salmons received little credit during her lifetime. She was a pioneering woman in her field and had two children with her husband, Cecil Jackson.
