He was instrumental in creating effective treatments for Burkitt lymphoma and childhood leukemia, collaborating with recognized scientists. His contributions earned him numerous awards like the Lasker Award and he co-authored the Karnofsky performance status scale. Besides his medical career, he was an avid climber and was married for 58 years with six children.
