Joseph A. Walker was a historic test pilot born on February 20, 1921, in Washington. He specialized in physics before serving in World War II, where he received distinguished honors for his aerial operations in Europe. In 1945, he joined NASA and tested important experimental aircraft, including the X-1, X-3, X-4, and X-5. In 1959, he led the civilian team testing the X-15 and excelled in its operation. He piloted LLRVs for lunar landing training in 1965 but tragically died in a crash on June 8, 1966, before witnessing Armstrong's moon landing.
