José Graziano da Silva, born on November 17, 1949, in the United States, is a Brazilian agricultural engineer and author known for his work on rural development, food security, and agricultural economics. He served as Minister of Agricultural Security from 2003 to 2004 and was responsible for the Zero Hunger Program which lifted approximately 24 million people out of poverty over eight years. Graziano da Silva was elected Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on June 26, 2011, becoming the first Latin American to hold this position, serving until July 31, 2019.
