José Gaspar d'Afonseca e Silva (1901-1943) was an influential Archbishop of São Paulo. He studied canon law in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1923. He served in various roles within the seminary before becoming an auxiliary bishop in São Paulo in 1935. Promoted to archbishop in 1939, he restructured the archdiocese and advocated for Christian moral theology within family law. A respected figure in the Church, he was involved in pastoral work and contributed to the Fourth Eucharistic Congress in Brazil in 1942. He tragically died in an airplane crash in 1943.
