Dom Frei José del Perpetuo Socorro Alvarez Mácua was a Spanish Catholic bishop and prelate of Lábrea, born on March 20, 1906. He joined the Augustinian Recollects at 16, was ordained a priest in 1929, and served in several locations, including Manaus and Soure. He became the Apostolic Administrator of Lábrea in 1944, later consecrated as bishop in 1948. He participated in the Second Vatican Council and was an author, historian, and poet, known for his work on the history of the Church of São José. He resigned from his episcopal position in 1967.
