José Calasans Brandão da Silva was a Brazilian historian and folklorist born in Aracaju, Sergipe in 1915 and died in Salvador, Bahia in 2001. After studying law, he became a teacher at secondary and higher education institutions in Sergipe before dedicating himself to historical research. He specialized in the history of his home state and the Canudos conflict of 1896-1897, authoring many works on the subject. Combining classical documentation with a scientific examination of popular songs and oral traditions, he documented the experiences of war survivors.
