Jorma Uolevi Salmi was a Finnish engineer, loudspeaker designer, and the founder of Gradient. He worked at Nokia and later headed the acoustics laboratory at Lohja Electronics, where he designed AAD loudspeakers. Salmi conducted research on how listening environments impacted speaker performance, publishing findings in 1982. In 1984, he co-founded Gradient to design speakers suited for typical listening rooms, minimizing environmental effects. Initially, the Sibelius Academy was a major client. By the 1990s, Gradient also focused on speaker aesthetics and began exporting abroad. His son, Atte Salmi, took over the business in 2010.
