Jonas Edward Salk (October 28, 1914 - June 23, 1995) was an esteemed scientist recognized for developing the first successful vaccine against poliomyelitis. His discovery significantly improved the lives of children and made him famous. In the late 1950s, Albert Sabin developed an oral vaccine, which eventually overshadowed Salk's injectable vaccine. During the 1960s, Salk directed research at the Salk Institute focusing on cancer and multiple sclerosis. He enhanced the polio vaccine to a single dose providing lifelong immunity and studied HIV in the 1980s. Salk received various accolades for his contributions to peace and science.
