Jon Postel was an American computer scientist born on August 6, 1943, and died on October 16, 1998. He made significant contributions to the development of the internet, particularly concerning standards. He is best known for being the editor of the Request for Comments (RFC) documents, a series of standards documents for internet governance, and for assigning numbers in the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) until his death. In his honor, the Postel Award was established by the Internet Society, and he was commemorated in RFC 2468.
