John Pitts Spence (1918-2013) was a pioneering American diver, recognized as the first combat frogman in U.S. history. A World War II veteran, he trained for underwater combat and demolition under the OSS. The term 'frogman' originated during his training. He served in key missions, including the Battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and trained combat swimmers in the Bahamas. After retiring from the Navy in 1961, he worked at Lockheed. He lived in several places, including California and Oregon, and had four daughters.
