John Jefferson Rox (1907–1957) was a notable American composer and lyricist, born in Des Moines, Iowa. He contributed to Broadway shows and the recording industry, with his song 'It's a Big Wide Wonderful World' (1939) featured in multiple film soundtracks. He is also known for the holiday song 'I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas' (1953), which gained popularity through a performance by 10-year-old Gayla Peevey. Rox married actress Alice Pearce in 1948, who is best remembered for her role as Gladys Kravitz in the television series 'Bewitched'.
