John Rowswell was a Canadian politician born on May 18, 1955, who served as the mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario from 2000 until his death in 2010. A consulting engineer by profession, Rowswell was first elected in the 2000 municipal election and re-elected in 2006. He was one of the longest-serving mayors in the city's history, known for apologizing to French Canadians for past language issues. Rowswell died in office from cancer, and his legacy was honored with a public wake and the dedication of the 2010 Terry Fox Run in his memory.
