John Robert Schrieffer is an American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1972, along with John Bardeen and Leon Cooper, for the BCS theory explaining superconductivity as a microscopic phenomenon involving pairs of electrons condensing into a boson-like state. Born on May 31, 1931, in Oak Park, Illinois, Schrieffer had an early interest in radio broadcasting which led him to study electrical engineering. Notably, he faced personal tragedy when he was imprisoned from 2005 to 2007 due to a car accident that resulted in fatalities.
