John Pople was a British chemist born on October 31, 1925, and passed away on March 15, 2004. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1946 and a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 1951. Although he considered himself a mathematician, he was always categorized as a chemist. He emigrated to the United States in 1930 and left Carnegie Mellon University for Northwestern University in 1986. Pople won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998 with Walter Kohn for developing computational methods in quantum chemistry.
