Francis John Minton was an English painter, illustrator, stage designer, and teacher born on December 25, 1917, in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire. After studying in France, he became a teacher in London while continuing his artistic work. Minton created landscapes, portraits, and other large-scale works, gaining fame as a book illustrator. However, in the mid-1950s, he felt increasingly marginalized by the rising trend of abstraction in art, struggled with psychological issues, self-medicated with alcohol, and ultimately took his own life in 1957.
