He won the Irish National Road Race Championships in 1983 and again in 1985, and also triumphed in the Tour of Armagh the same year. McQuaid competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, finishing 49th in the individual road race and 19th in the team time trial alongside the Irish team. He comes from a cycling family with several relatives who also participated in the sport, including his cousin Pat McQuaid, former president of the UCI.
