John Macleod Ball, born in 1948, is a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Oxford. He served as president of the International Mathematical Union from 2003 to 2006 and is a Fellow of Queen's College, Oxford. His educational background includes studies at the University of Cambridge and the University of Sussex. Ball's research interests encompass elasticity, calculus of variations, and infinite-dimensional dynamical systems. He was knighted in 2006 for services to science and has received various accolades, including the King Faisal International Prize in Mathematics in 2018.
