John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor is a Ghanaian politician who served as the President of Ghana from January 7, 2001, to January 7, 2009. He was also the chairperson of the African Union from 2007 to 2008. His victory over John Evans Atta Mills marked Ghana's first peaceful democratic transition since independence in 1957. Kufuor had a career in liberal-democratic politics, affiliated with parties stemming from the United Gold Coast Convention and the United Party. He held ministerial roles and led the New Patriotic Party to victories in 2000 and 2004 elections.
