John H. Van Vliet Jr. was a U.S. Army officer born on November 9, 1914, in Texas City. He became known for being a prisoner of war in April 1943 when the Wehrmacht took him as a witness to the uncovered mass graves at Katyn. His report on the Katyn massacre, referred to as the 'Van Vliet Report', sparked controversy and led to the establishment of a Congressional investigation committee, known as the Madden Commission, in 1951.
