He improved the catalytic method based on platinum catalysts by incorporating another metal, leading to the development of a platinum-iridium catalyst. This innovation facilitated the cost-effective production of high-octane gasoline, making lead additives unnecessary, particularly after a 1973 U.S. environmental regulation. Sinfelt received numerous accolades for his work, including the National Medal of Science and was a member of prestigious scientific academies.
