John Elliott Nafe was an American oceanographer and geophysicist, born on July 22, 1914, in Seattle, and passed away on April 6, 1996. He was notable for his research on acoustic propagation in oceans and solid earth. Nafe earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1938 and later obtained an MS and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and Columbia University, respectively. His work contributed to submarine detection systems and the relationship between density and seismic velocity.
