Air Vice-Marshal John Chegwyn Thomas Downey was a senior commander in the Royal Air Force. He began his military career during World War II, flying various aircraft including Spitfires and Catalinas, and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. Post-war, Downey broke records during a round-the-world flight in a modified Lincoln bomber and received an Air Force Cross. He held various positions in the MoD and NATO before retiring in 1975, becoming a Companion of the Order of the Bath. He married Diana White in 1941.
