John Dering Nettleton was a South African pilot born on June 28, 1917, in Nongoma, Natal Province. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest honor for bravery in the face of enemy actions that can be granted to a British subject or citizen of a Commonwealth country. He is notable for his contributions during World War II and his ultimate sacrifice, which occurred in Brest, France, on July 12/13, 1943.
