John Cheever (May 27, 1912 – June 18, 1982) was an American novelist and short story writer, often referred to as the 'Chekhov of the suburbs.' His works primarily explore human duality, reflected in his characters' social graces juxtaposed with inner corruption. Cheever set many stories in Manhattan's Upper East Side, Westchester suburbs, and historic New England villages. Notable short stories include 'The Swimmer' and 'Goodbye, Brother.' His collection 'The Stories of John Cheever' won the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 1979. He received the National Medal of Literature shortly before his death.
