John C. Mather is an American astrophysicist born on August 7, 1945. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006 for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) alongside George Smoot. COBE was the first experiment to measure the black body formation and the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Mather's research contributed significantly to the validation of the Big Bang theory, supporting the understanding of the universe's origins.
