John Bertelsen (1917-1978) was a Danish preschool teacher, leisure educator, and author. He grew up in a poor household and started an apprenticeship at age 13. He was arrested by Gestapo in 1936 while in Germany and later became involved in resistance activities during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Bertelsen is best known for his role as the first playleader at the Emdrup Skrammelpark, the world's first construction playground, which opened in 1943. His innovative pedagogical ideas influenced leisure education in various countries, including the UK, USA, and Japan.
