He made significant contributions to science, most notably developing the lithium-ion battery and the Goodenough-Kanamori rules for determining the polarity of magnetic superexchange in materials. He held a professorship at the University of Texas at Austin in mechanical engineering and materials science. Goodenough was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 and was the oldest Nobel laureate at 97. He passed away on June 25, 2023, just before his 101st birthday.
