Jockin Arputham was an Indian community leader and activist born on August 15, 1947, in Karnataka, India. He dedicated over 40 years to campaigning for the rights of slum dwellers and shanty town residents. After relocating to Mumbai, he became a prominent community figure and was instrumental in founding Slum Dwellers International. In recognition of his social contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2011 and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
