John Thomas Byrne MBE (1903-1969) was a notable Scottish trade union leader and anti-communist activist known for his role in the Electrical Trades Union. Rising to the position of Glasgow area secretary for eighteen years, he contested for the general secretary position multiple times against Frank Haxell. Following significant electoral disputes and accusations against the CPGB, Byrne successfully became general secretary in 1961 after a court ruling. He passionately worked to expel communists from the union and led efforts to reintegrate the ETU into the TUC and Labour Party before retiring due to health concerns.
