Born in Wichita, Kansas, he graduated from Wichita State University and began his career as an editorial cartoonist. After relocating to Dallas in 1978, he shifted to freelance art and illustration. 'Geech' premiered in 1982 and enjoyed syndication until his death, while 'Shirley and Son,' focusing on post-divorce life, started in 2000. Bittle passed away from a heart attack in Honduras, after which an educational trust was established in his honor.
