A trained farmer, he started his political career in 1986 and became a member of the Løgstør Municipal Council. He served as mayor of Løgstør and became the first mayor of the newly merged Vesthimmerland Municipality in 2006. Lauritzen has held various board positions, including at Aalborg Airport and Himmerland Cooperative Agricultural Associations.
