Jean-Pierre Eckmann, born January 27, 1944, is a mathematical physicist at the University of Geneva's theoretical physics department and a pioneer in chaos theory and social network analysis. He completed his Ph.D. in 1970 and has been a member of the European Academy since 2001. Eckmann made significant contributions to the mathematical justification of bifurcation in dynamical systems and proposed the Eckmann-Ruelle conjecture, a key problem in the interface of dimension theory and dynamical systems. He has also worked in statistical mechanics, partial differential equations, and graph theory.
