He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987 for his work on 'molecular recognition,' which led to the emergence of a new branch of chemistry known as supramolecular chemistry. He also received the Davy Medal in 1997 and was appointed to the Higher Council for Science in 2006.
