Jean Malaurie (born December 22, 1922) is a French anthropologist, explorer, geographer, physicist, and writer. He and Koutsiqituk (an Inuit) were the first two men to reach the Earth's geomagnetic pole on May 29, 1951. Malaurie was the director of studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales and authored the 'Terre Humaine' series, which included his famous work 'The Last Kings of Thule' (1955), translated into 23 languages, among other significant works about the Inuit people. He advocated for the rights of Arctic minorities threatened by industrial development and was appointed a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for Arctic issues.
