He earned his Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Paris-South and later served as a professor at various institutions including the École polytechnique. Lannes made significant contributions to the generalized Sullivan conjecture and the cohomology theory of classifying spaces of groups. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1994 and supervised notable students such as Fabien Morel.
