Jean Jal, born Georges Bastyns, was a Belgian-born French songwriter and composer known for his contributions to French music. He was born on March 23, 1908, in Visé, Belgium, and died on March 28, 1984, in Buzançais, France. He is recognized particularly for composing 'C'était une histoire d'amour' for Édith Piaf, with lyrics by Henri Contet, and 'Il ne faut pas briser un rêve', performed by Jean Sablon and Lucienne Delyle. In 1938, he also acted in the short film 'Quand le cœur chante.' He became a French national in 1940.
