Born in Clerval, he studied law before entering the seminary. He served as a priest in Besançon and became the curé of Lantenne-Vertière in 1936. Passionate about local society, he emphasized the importance of literature, museums, and art in educating people about their heritage, notably founding the Musée comtois and the Musée des Maisons comtoises.
