Jean-Claude Martzloff was a French sinologist and historian of mathematics, born on December 17, 1943, in Paris. He served as a research director at the CNRS at the Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies in Paris. Martzloff was regarded as one of the leading Western authorities on the history of Chinese mathematics and published a seminal book on the subject in 1987. He also explored the history of astronomy in China. Martzloff passed away on January 10, 2018, at the age of 74 in Paris.
