Jean-Bédel Bokassa (1921-1996) was a military officer who became the President of the Central African Republic (CAR) from 1966 to 1976, and later declared himself Emperor Bokassa I from 1976 to 1979. Known for his extravagant lifestyle, he was notorious for the brutality of his regime, which included allegations of murder and cannibalism. After being deposed in 1979, he lived in exile before returning for trial in 1986, where he faced multiple charges. Despite this, he was granted amnesty and died a free man in 1996.
