János Tamás was a Hungarian-Swiss composer, conductor, and educator born on May 24, 1936, in Budapest. After fleeing Hungary following the 1956 uprising, he completed his studies in Zurich and Bern. He worked as a solo repetiteur at the Zurich City Theatre and later became the chief conductor at the Biel-Solothurn City Theatre. He taught at the Alte Kantonsschule in Aarau and conducted the Aarau Orchestra, leaving behind approximately 120 compositions. His compositional legacy has been managed by the Paul Sacher Foundation since 2011.
