Jānis Ikaunieks was a Latvian astronomer born on April 28, 1912, in Riga, and he passed away on April 27, 1969, in the same city. His scientific work prominently focused on the study of red giants, particularly carbon stars. He founded the Latvian Astronomical Society and was the editor of the popular science magazine The Starry Sky. After the establishment of the Baldone Observatory, he was appointed as its first director.
