Following his retirement, Perera took on significant diplomatic roles, including High Commissioner to Australia and Ambassador to Indonesia. Tragically, he lost his life in a suicide bombing attributed to the LTTE on October 6, 2008. His leadership and service in the army and politics left a lasting impact on Sri Lanka.
